How is the Ideal candidate for hair transplantation

Anyone who has experienced permanent hair loss may be a candidate for hair restoration surgery, including:

  • Men with male pattern baldness/ androgentic alopecia.
  • Men who want to restore or change the shape of their hairline.
  • People with areas of scarring from injuries or “scarring” skin diseases, and also patients who experienced some hair loss after any surgery.
  • People who want to thicken or restore eyebrows, eyelashes, and beards.
  • Men and women who want hair in an area where they have little or no hair.

Androgenetic Alopecia?

Androgenetic Alopecia is an important and the most common cause for pattern baldness in male. In Androgenetic Alopecia:

  • Follicles undergo miniaturization which means shrinking from terminal full grown long hairs to vellus like short hairs about 1 cm in length.
  • The duration of growth phase also decreases from 3-5 years(normal) to 1-3 months(defective) and hair shedding increases.

What I need to know about Hair Transplantation?

Hair transplantation is an outpatient surgery done under local anesthesia which takes only about 4-8 hours for a session. The transplant involves removal of the hair-follicle containing skin from the back or sides of the scalp (donor area) and harvesting them in areas of concern (recipient area) such as bald areas / areas of reduced volume. There is minimal discomfort during the entire procedure.

The grafts obtained are separated into follicular unit grafts (containing 1-4 hairs) and multi-follicular unit grafts (containing 3-6 hairs each) which are then meticulously planted into the recipient area at the exact angle as the other hairs present to give the scalp a very natural look. Depending on the degree of balding in the various frontal and crown areas, 2-3 procedures are performed.

Modern techniques of hair transplantation can restore lost hair and re-shape your hairline with your own natural, growing hair, which needs regular hair care that you have always done. Patients are extremely satisfied with the advanced techniques such as FUE due to its cosmetic appeal.

What happens post procedure?

After the completion of the procedure, minimal dressing is applied after a final check on the placement of grafts and the patient is given post procedure instructions and allowed to go home on the very same day.

Small crusts will be formed on each graft within a day and will shed in the next 1-2 weeks. The grafted hairs will often begin to grow by 3-4 months after the procedure and will continue to grow for most, if not all of one’s life.

When is the best time to start surgery?

We recommend beginning Medical Treatment of significant hair loss as soon as the problem has been identified. Medical treatments such as finasteride and minoxidil are usually recommended for men with hair loss to help preserve or partially reverse thinning hair in the crown. It also has added advantages of maintaining hair in the donor area as well as enhancing the long term results of hair restoration surgery.

Patients may have hair restoration surgery any time after their mid 20’s. It is important to at least have the first procedure done before going completely bald. Transplants can be used to fill in the front hairline or thicken the front of the scalp.
