Results and the number of sessions required to remove the tattoo will depend on

  • Whether they are Professional tattoos/ amateur tattoos: As professional tattoos are applied with a tattoo machine into the deeper layer of the dermis and are permanent in nature,so generally require repetitive treatments to achieve the desired results and Amateur tattoos, on the other hand, are usually lighter as they are applied more superficially using handheld needles, which render them easier to remove.
  • The type and colour of ink used:  As these inks may contain titanium dioxide and iron oxide and are difficult to remove.

Generally, black and dark blue pigment respond best to Nd: YAG and alexandrite lasers.

  • Previous isotretinoin treatment
  • Herpes infection
  • Keloidal tendencies
  • Duration of sun exposure

As additional precautionary measures may be needed in the above-mentioned scenario.

What I should know before going in for my laser session?

Multiple laser treatments are usually required to remove a tattoo, with an average number of 6-10 treatments often being needed.

  • Tattoo clearance may be incomplete and a residual tattoo outline with textural changes may be seen.
  • Local reactions include blistering, edema, crusting, erythema, and pain can occur but go away.

How is the laser done?

  • The area to be treated should be cleansed thoroughly and free from any cosmetics.
  • Topical anesthetics such as 2.5% lidocaine/2.5% prilocaine (EMLA) are often applied under occlusion for 30-45 minutes and will be completely removed prior to treatment. In patients with a better pain tolerance, ice or cool air alone is used as method of reducing discomfort.
  • In darkly pigmented patients or in those with poor sun protection habits, test spots can be carried out and evaluated at 4-6 weeks for efficacy and side effects.
